Your MC – Master of Ceremonies (or, of course, Mistress) is the host at your wedding and is there to make sure everyone’s happy and that everything’s going to plan. They introduce new speakers and guide everyone to the important events and happenings within your big day. You don’t just need an MC, though; you need a great MC, and here’s why.
A great MC is organised
Your MC will have a tight grip on the day’s timeline, as well as on what everyone’s going to say and when. He or she will introduce every speaker with a few words and then step back.
They’ll keep everyone else in the loop as well
Your great MC will work with your vendors as well as with the wedding party so that everyone is at the top of their game and is on time with their roles. They’ll lead your guests and audience almost seamlessly from one portion of the event to the next.
Your MC is always prepared
Your MC should know how to, essentially, host a variety performance. Their speaking parts should be concise and carry a warm wit. Most of this can be pre-scripted, but a good MC will also be spontaneous enough to deal with the unexpected, like a sudden shower or a small child interrupting the proceedings.
The MC can add some emotion and background
A good idea is to talk to the main speakers before the big day to glean a snippet of history to add some depth to the introductions. This keeps the emotions high and brings people together.
A great MC can read the audience
It’s embarrassing when a joke falls flat at a wedding speech, or the humour just doesn’t fit the crowd. Your MC will adapt their humour to the crowd so that everyone feels welcome and not offended in any way. The MC isn’t the star of the show, so they won’t be tempted to try out their latest stand-up routine and steal your spotlight.
